[ DEITIES of Duat // DEITIES Project ]
Holy geez this may be the first fully polished illustration I've done since… summer?? Haha it's been so long, BUT I'm glad I could finish something in time for the holidays, and that it ended up being DEITIES related! I tried a few things in this image tho, and while there are some thing I may do differently in the future, I'm happy with what I learned and how it turned out o)9
BUT YES just as the title says, these six gods and goddesses make up... one of the most dysfunctional royal families in written mythology. I say it endearingly here since they also happen to be main characters in DEITIES project (and I enjoy working with them all a lot), but it's still a fairly honest descriptor for them -- you need only read the basics on the mythology to understand what I mean. For those less familiar with Egyptian mythology, here are the bare bones information you may want to know that also hold true in DEITIES:
Osiris, Set, Isis and Nephthys were the four children born from their parents Nut (Sky Goddess) and Geb (Earth God). And as many mythologies tend to display, they were also paired with each other as husband and wife. Osiris and Isis wed and become the king and queen of Duat, and have their son, Horus; while Set and Nephthys pair together and have their son, Anubis.
AND BEFORE I KEEP GOING and create a full novel adaptation for the mythology / for DEITIES backstory, let's just say thru a series of extreme family drama, and a variety of other events that make up The Contendings, we end up with a very complex family dynamic.
...Which mainly consists of Set being a pain in the ass / causing a fuss for his own entertainment, and to his family's collective chagrin.
Hopefully the rest of the picture is self explanatory as far as how they relate to each other, but if it's unclear don't worry! I fully plan to share more details about each their relationships as the project progresses o)9
Also, b/c I anticipate this question coming up if it hasn't already, yes Set is intentionally fair-skinned. Among other things like chaos and storms, he is known as a God of Foreigners, and I've found information that describe Set as sometimes having lighter skin (and red hair) to represent this aspect about him. Hence why he appears so much lighter than the rest of his family, as well as the majority of the pantheon.
Osiris, meanwhile, has pure black skin here because he's a resurrected mummy king, what with being the God of the Dead and all. He did have a naturally dark skin tone when he was alive, but following his death he was described and shown to have black skin (or green or blue skin, depending on what you read) b/c black represented both life and death in Ancient Egypt.

Family is just great, amirite?
Also, I love how Horus has been demoted to "arm rest"
I'll have to look through your other pictures, even if it's just look at more "sassy Isis"
But little family tree question, wasn't Anubis Osiris's little cub? (I can't remember Set ever being able to have children . . . )
I'm fine with you changing it around for your story (trust me, I've done far more dramatic changes in some of mine ) but I just thought I'd ask
HAHA PRETTY MUCH! Makes him fun to work with for sure tho o)777
Yehhhh, I never decided why Horus would be crouching down there but just figured Set saw the opportunity and took it :'D
And sure feel free! Isis is fun to draw, there's some more artwork of her in her tag on the blog as well: deitiesofduat.tumblr.com/tagge…
And hmmm, good question… for now I'll answer that it's "up to audience interpretation," even within my version of the story. The controversy behind Anubis's paternity seems to vary in different myths; I've found some versions that insist that Set is indeed his father, and others that claim Osiris is (and others that claim Anubis is not related to either!). I've been aware of this for awhile and have my headcanons for parts of the myth to adapt for the story, but I'd rather wait before I share them, since there are project-related details I haven't confirmed yet. If I do address it, it'll be in either backstory notes or the actual plot.
As far as the characters are concerned / how aware they are, that's a detail that I'll also save for the story. But if you were to ask them, they would all insist on the same thing; Anubis acknowledges Set as his father, and Set sees Anubis as his son, regardless of whatever their blood relation is o)7
Also, when I saw that Horus was kneeling down, I just assumed he was looking for his monocle ('cause of the whole "eye of Horus" thing . . . the "monocle of Horus" . . . I don't know )
Also THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT LINK!!! I haven't had this much God related fun since I first found "Stick Gods" (another Egyptian God based comic *Link* inonibird.tumblr.com/stick-god… )
I like how Isis is so organized, nothing seems to faze her ^u^
. . . That said, it was kinda hard to see her with Set posing in the way! The way he flicks his hair around, I'm surprised I haven't seen him advertising for "l'oreal" yet (joking Set, but really you should be more careful, you could knock someone out swinging your hair about like that! And "death by posing storm god's hair" isn't on anyone's to-do list )
And thank you for the answer! Sometimes the Egyptian deities genealogy resembles a bowl of noodles more then a tree
But one thing seems consistent: That Set and Anubis are like Father and Son, no matter how noodley things get
And may I just add that though I haven't seen as much of him as the others yet, I like your version of Anubis.
He seems very calm . . . like a kinda chill surfer jackal
And you're welcome! The blog is a little quiet right now, but I plan to update it with more content and notes/pages later (and I love inonibird's Stick Gods, they're on of my fav comics / inspirations for the project!)
Yep, Isis is a pretty straight faced character most of the time. And Set's characters strikes me as the type that doesn't mine flaunting his good hair and good looks ;D
And sure no problem! If you want to and you have a tumblr acct, you can submit questions to the askbox once I open it (probably sometime in June) o)7 But yeah, I should share my notes for the family tree I'll be using for the project later, since there are so many variations in the myths.
And thanks! Anubis is meant to be a pretty calm/agreeable character in the project, at least compared to his father, so I hope to share more about him soon!
stop it with these attractive people do you want me to die
